Application Service Engineer

Description

A permanent IT role to provide technical support for a portfolio of applications within the Application Operations area. The engineer is responsible for proactively identifying problems, monitoring application availability, providing 2nd-level end-user support, performing problem analysis, restoring services, and engaging in continuous improvement, release management, and disaster recovery planning.

Responsibilities

  • Internal Process
  • Proactively identify problems and manage risks that may compromise application availability.
  • Monitor end-to-end service and application availability.
  • Provide 2nd-level end-user support for a portfolio of applications.
  • Engage in problem analysis for applications across multiple platforms.
  • Restore services after a break in availability.
  • Maintain service availability according to Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Engage in continuous improvement of service availability and performance.
  • Participate in the release management of new applications/upgrades/changes.
  • Engage in capacity planning for the Applications Portfolio.
  • Focus on preventative maintenance (e.g., security updates).
  • Consider the life cycle management of Application services.
  • Engage with vendors for problem resolution and application support.
  • Engage in disaster recovery and business continuity planning for Application services.
  • Client Services
  • Provide authoritative expertise and advice to stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Deliver on SLAs to manage client expectations.
  • Make recommendations to improve client service.
  • People & Finance
  • Develop productive working relationships; drive own career development.
  • Identify cost-effective solutions and manage resources.
  • Provide input into risk identification processes.

Qualifications

  • Education:
  • Matric Certificate / Grade 12 (essential).
  • IT Diploma/Degree / BSc Computer Science or any related degree/diploma (essential).
  • ITIL Certification (desired).
  • Experience:
  • 4 – 5 years relevant IT experience.
  • End-user support experience.
  • Skills & Knowledge:
  • Expert technical knowledge of disaster recovery.
  • Knowledge of end-user support for portfolio applications, lifecycle management, and software development practices (DevOps, CI/CD toolchains).
  • Advantageous: TICK and ELK (open source monitoring tools), GIT, Ansible, Python scripting.
  • Competencies: Examining information, interpreting data, providing insights, interacting with people, articulating information, meeting timescales, and following procedures.
